I had to renew my regular DL about a month ago so I did it online. Very convenient.

However, in all the info and the instructions and whatnot not one mention was made of the deadline quickly approaching for the Real ID. About a week later I get a notice telling me about the Real ID deadline and that I can get one for $9. It also advised that it is free if you apply for a real ID at the time of renewal.

So I go in to the DMV to see if I can get a real ID because just days earlier I renewed my license without the Real ID BS.

Nope. $9, please. Had the lady behind the counter not been so cute I would have yelled at her about what a POS our governor is for not automatically telling people the real ID is FREE upon renewal. Instead I calmly advised her that this crap is exactly why the people of Michigan don’t trust the government. The lady said, yeah, it’s the principle. No, I said, it’s the 9 dollars! Nobody expects the government to know anything about principles.

Total scam!
