F1 tech is cool..
Horner has been complaining for a while about McLaren's ability to keep their tire at the right temp, warm them quick but not overheat them. They spied on their brake drums / tires to get temp measurement and suspected that McLaren used water cooling... (illegal) Hence Zack making a point of drinking "tire water" on TV in Miami to annoy Horner..
Apparently, it's a clever trick - they are using 'phase change' material in the lining of the brake cover (the drum thingie). That material is chosen to melt at a certain temperature, and when it does (I imagine it's contained in a wrapper), the melting process absorbs temperature from the brakes "for free". So the brakes don't overheat the tires.. it's 100% passive so 100% legal...apparently it's tech used in jackets (clothing I mean) already, nothing new, but new in F1 brakes ! the stuff they come up with... I imagine there would be an unsprung weight penalty but I'm no car engineer...
