You could always stay closer to shore and fly fish the surf. Barred Perch, Corbina, etc. Me and lowyder993 went fishing in Ventura.
Double check the fish and game laws so you don't get ticketed. Down here we had a moratorium on rock fish and cod.

Great fishing up in Venture. We use to go out from the harbor during those college years and catch a boat load of rock fish during late autumn. Cold is all I can say and the waves were big out in that big ocean.
