For this monumental aerial photograph, shot from 1,000 feet above the St. Louis riverfront on Oct. 9, 1913, pilot Tony Jannus pulls a string to activate a box camera fixed to wing of his Benoist hydroplane. Jannus then swooped down to land in the Mississippi River, taxiing to shore in the airplane with spruce boat hull. Fans awaited him at the wharf.
