I can say with certainty that your steering does not feel close to what a stock 912 does. It was 'light' in that you could steer it with two fingers on the spokes of the steering wheel. No gripping of the steering wheel rim required.
It really has nothing to do with the engine weight in the rear as much as it does with the contact patch of the tires.
If you ever get a chance to try driving a 912 or even a 911 with skinny tires/wheels, do it. It'll open your eyes as to how these cars really were meant to be enjoyed.
