My Danish girlfriend loved pickled herring (sardines are herring). She would put some pickled herring on a slice of rugbrot (not spelled correctly), which is a kind of paving material that passes for bread in Denmark, with a slice of onion and a slice of a boiled egg. I could handle it if I had a beer for a chaser.
