They must have changed the policy recently because a few years ago, I was in the same boat and Lowes just gave me the latest version of both of my 3/8 ratchets that had failed.
Does Lowes still sell Craftsman tools but not honor the warranty now? Or only if it's a tool that you bought from them? That sucks.
