^^^ I'm still recommending it....just to see what 'could' happen on a cruise.
I faintly remember hearing of this when it happened and laughed it off at that time.
About 4000 passengers on a Carnival cruise in the Gulf of America had an engine fire that cut all the electric to the ship for 5 days. No lights, or air conditioning, and the refrigerated food all spoiled in the second day.
Sewage backed up and flooded the cabin floors and showers. All were given red bags to poop in. The first night people woke up and said that when getting out of bed, there was something wet and squishing between their toes.
Cabins were so hot inside that sleeping was impossible. Passengers carried their mattresses out onto the decks to sleep. Too many people for the space so all were sleeping body to body.
When it was all over, Carnival gave each passenger $500 and a free ticket for a future cruise.

(Not sure of the exact dollar amount.)
