The thing is with USAA when only commissioned officers were eligible their direct families were tagged as eligible. My first wife was the daughter of a Marine Col. and when we divorced I got my own USAA account which I have maintained for better or worse for 45 years. Enlisted were not eligible at the time and yet I had a policy. I was never even in the military.

I think things have changed but I personally have no beef and until I do I doubt I will jump ship. Things are sketchy enough in CA.

On the comment about USAA not challenging a post accident claim they did a similar thing to me. My work truck was totalled while parked unattended. They settled with me for the loss and AFIK never recovered the loss from the guilty party. They wouldn't even discuss it. I turned to my ins co because it turned out the daughter of a high ranking policeman in our city was the at fault driver. As soon as the police arrived on the scene I was not allowed to speak with the other driver nor ask for insurance and DL info. They told me that I could wait for a police report or pound sand.

I let USAA take over. The police stonewalled USAA by delaying the report for weeks. USAA called me a few times about the report and I told them I could not get it yet according to the local PD accident investigation. Meanwhile I needed some money so that's how it went down. Don't get in an accident with a police family.
