oh ok yes door skins are pre stamped with the curves in them they are not a totally flat panel.

depending on the car and the amount of damage to the skin is what would determine if it's a total door skin replacement or a patch panel. often with a older car your dealing with rust between the skin and shells where the skin folds over the edge of the shell. with this I tend to just replace the whole skin and clean up any rush on the door shell.

with some door skins they will fit very tight on the door shell with having no adjustment to move the skin to fit the car properly.
sometimes you have to remove just a bit of the metal from the door shell to have the skin fit the door opening on the car.
I will start the folding over of the door skin on the shell then fit the door on the car before I finish folding the door skins edge over tightly. this is what I mean about fitting on the car 1st before you fold the skin over tightly.
this way you can move the skin on the door shell to get a proper gap with out running out of adjustment on the door hinges.
once the doors gaps are looking good I will finish folding over the skin making it tight on the door shell.

using a door skin hammer and a good dolly IMO is a must. they also have some good fold over tools for installing door skins but I'm kind of old school and tend not to use them much.
