Before I used the stump out, I tried my sharpened axe to see if I could chip off enough of the outside top of the stump to give a gradual rise for the mower.
I don't do it often, but I know how to swing an axe. That dried surface of a few years dead elm is like concrete. If the axe doesn't hit it square...it just ricochets off. I gave up with that after a dozen swings.
