I don't think anyone mentioned this so...

You cannot really stretch wood fibers, you can only compress them. So a good way to bend is to add a thin strip of metal to the outer diameter. That strips stops the bending action from pulling the OD fibers apart, and only allows the inner fibers to compress.

Wet/steam/boil/heat etc, then compress the ID.
