I'm on a dune ridge - higher than anyone else in my neighborhood.
Ironically......the stretch of roadway I'm on is lower than that north and south of me so it always floods during big rainstorms. I don't mind as it helps smooth out the right-of-way I left along the east side of my property for the mailman and/or other delivery drivers.
My ground level garage is off the side street so not affected. I've never had flood issues here. Unlike a lot of the neighborhoods on the mainland. My Mom's house for example needed all new flooring after Ian 3 years ago.
I always shake my head when people say they don't want to live on the barrier island because of hurricanes. Hell....this is THE place you want to be. I've hunkered down for every one since buying my place in '96. Of course my house was built in '62 and is concrete block with a metal roof so fairly stout.
The key is being able to generate electricity for yourself. If you can do that you're gold....
