Even a small inverter generator like we used last year worked well but we obviously didn't have water or AC in the whole house. We slept fine though and didn't lose our food or ability to stay in the house. Mine cost about $400 secondhand and uses about 1 gallon/ 8-10 hrs. running a window unit, fridge and some lamps as needed.
