I use plastic tubs with a closing lid - for both bungees and ratchet straps.

Something I picked up on? The rubber bungees from Harbor Freight are pretty darn good. But they have stupid S hooks that fall out. Solution? I hammered the S closed over the rubber bit. They still get all tangled up but they at least have both ends when you need them.

Second. Ratchet straps are not really the best for lots of jobs. I use cam lock straps for my dirt bikes. Just a better solution. They have never come undone. They pack smaller and lighter. They don't have a big ratchet gizmo. Just some data points.
