Need Advice: 1986 Porsche 944 – High Idle & Fuel Smell After Engine Work
Hello everyone,
I’m new to the forum and recently picked up a 1986 Porsche 944 that I’ve been bringing back to life. The car runs, but I’ve been chasing down some tuning issues and could really use some advice from experienced 944 owners.
Symptoms:
• High idle (around 1,500–1,800 RPM even when warm)
• Noticeable fuel smell when running
• Occasional stumble when revving from idle
Work Done So Far:
• Recently rebuilt long block installed
• New spark plugs and wires
• Checked for obvious vacuum leaks (didn’t find any)
• Adjusted idle screw, but no real change
• Timing set according to spec (at least as far as I can tell)
Questions:
1. Could this be a vacuum leak I’m missing, maybe under the intake?
2. Is it possible the AFM (air flow meter) needs adjustment or cleaning?
3. Should I be checking the DME temp sensor or fuel pressure regulator first?
I’m learning as I go, so I’d really appreciate any troubleshooting steps or “common 944 tricks” the community can share. If anyone has fought a similar high idle + rich running issue, I’d love to hear what solved it.
Thanks in advance! Looking forward to learning from you all.
