IMO, on the side of the road, I have no power. Most officers I know (or have had to talk with on the side of the road) are decent folks just doing their job. I have had the "pleasure" of dealing with a local officer who had a reputation for being on a power trip. I saw it the moment he stomped up to my window and started screaming at me that he wanted to "haul you azz off to jail" with a bunch of bogus charges.

I did a lot of "yes sir" "no sir" "I'm sorry sir" and I guess my groveling fed his minimum daily requirement of power-tripping and after he threatened me he let me go. About year or so later I saw a news article where he tried to intimidate the wrong person, got his pic on the front of the local newsy community magazine and eventually lost his job. It was then I found out how bad he was.
