Takes a minute, but I will dissect my old flannel sheets for shop rags. You'll get different "gauges" of fabric from the worn middles to the very sweet, absorbent edges that my jimmy leg has not worn thin.
And no, don't wash them. If it's worth washing it gets used for more dirty business before it's tossed. Old tee shirts and cotton boxers will also make it into my rag bin. I do wash the fruit of the looms one last time before they head to the rag box cause I will use the "new" shop rags for blowing my nose now and again....
