My thinking is that it is not hard to remove and replace the walking surface on a deck, the hassle and expense is when the structure - posts, joists, railing supports, stringers - get rotted and the deck has to be rebuilt.

If you were building a deck with the idea that the structure should last a very long time - 50 years? more? - with the deck boards being replaced every couple decades or so, how would you do it?
