Back in the late 80s they were running oval cars an average over 50mph on track. Back then the sprint cars could pull the front wheels up where all the stuff now days can do it.
The Drag "Top Fuel" cars were pushing 80-90mph with motors turning 110k rpm with NiCads.
During filming of Deadpool (Dirty Harry, not the Marvel one) Jay Halsey had to be told to slow down and not pass the full size car when they were filming the 1/10 Corvette chase scene.
Also, Gloria Estefan from Miami Sound Machine was big into racing R/C at that time. She was featured in the same article of R/C Car Action as the interview with Jumpin' Jay Halsey.
