^^^ This. These barrier islands move ... they are not static, and when there were just a few hundred people living there, loss of structures was a given, the only road being washed out regularly was a given, and every year the ocean moves the sand around... always has, always will.
For 10,000 years or more since humans have lived on the coast... don't build on shifting sand!
