Amazing story.
15th AAF 483rd BG 840th BS Ewald Swanson Crew. An 88mm shell hit the nose, killing the navigator and bombardier immediately. Pilot Ewald Swanson, Co-pilot Paul Berndt and Flight Engineer Frank Gramenzi kept the plane, “Mizpah”, in the air for about 10 minutes while the other 5 members bailed out. Then, they bailed out. Those who bailed out survived and became POWs till the end of the war.
