I've had good luck with traps over the years. I've found that cheese and peanut butter are moderate, but meat, like sausage, pepperoni, hard salami, etc... all seem to work pretty well. Yes, placement is also key.

I've got a couple of these.


I've also used some poison that does work, but also makes a mess and seems like it attracts more guests.

Interesting, I have always gotten their head.
