I bet if you'd owned and worked on a Yamaha/Honda/Suzuki/Kawasaki back in the mid 70's you would have learned about JIS the minute you tried to take out any of the case screws. They were big and pretty soft-headed, and a phillips head screwdriver would roach them in a big hurry. But if you happened to have the correct screwdriver (unlikely!) you could easily remove them most of the time.

Two things I still have from 'back in the day' are an impact driver in a little tin case with 4 screwbits and the knowledge that I bought a few allen-head screw sets to replace the JIS screws in several of my Yamahas.
