If the solenoid is pulling in when the starter motor is fitted to the car, then it has to be either the starter motor faulty [you say it works on the bench] or faulty ground straps, again you've said you have checked these, or main high current cabling going to the starter motor or battery, I think you need to re-check everything as suggested.

 Does anyone know what the no alternator light (which always comes on until car idles) means to this situation?  It's probably a good clue to those who know more.
