My guess is the mods both make it faster but also easier to drive. I know many, many years ago when 930 mods were common, driveability was on par with extra power.
Not a Turbo but a low power Turbo, driving my M491 is just as easy as my 07 328i with a little extra effort in parking lot steering.
Was the 4 speed exhausting? Or ...?
