I thought code was 3/4” minimum and 1-1/4” maximum. That’s what we go by anyway.
If you remove the risers, you can cut them down so they don’t touch the treads, then glue and screw them back on. Besides nails, you can be get squeaking from the risers, rubbing on the treads.
