Even folks 100 years ago knew Fir wood was a soft, not fit for stairs or other wear traffic areas like a stairway. I did not catch the OP's location, but I would think that a home that old would use something available in the region. Looking at the grain on the risers does not look like any fir I've ever hammered a nail into, but the oak or Mahogany you suggest. That's why I asked after all
