Everyone is trying to make their instrument lights brighter while I'm over here turning them as down as far as possible. Why?

You should dim your instrument lights to prevent them from glaring in your eyes at night, which improves your ability to see the road. At night, your eyes are adjusted to a lower light level, so bright dashboard lights can be distracting and impair your vision, while in the daytime, brighter lights are needed to be seen against sunlight. Dimming the lights provides comfortable visibility in both low and high light conditions, enhancing safety and driver comfort.

Saab did it best with their "night panel" feature
