Black Friday? Avoided at all costs. No way on Earth.
Instead, a now 25 year tradition of the Pac West chapter of R Gruppe, our annual "Turkey Hangover" drive. Rather than laying lethargically on the couch watching football games or fighting the mall crowds, we head for the lonely back roads. "Black Friday" to us is generous black clouds of MFI inducted engines' exhaust, accompanied by the glorious sound of hot rodded flat sixes at full song through sport mufflers. We lucked out and got a sunny day this year.
I'm still not able to drive because of my hip surgery, so I rode shotgun in my younger son's '68 912/911 hot rod that we built together as his senior year high school project. He bought it at 15 years old as a rust bucket with a blown 912 motor, so we spent his senior year replacing the front gas tank support, pans, etc. while removing the 912 motor mounts and installing 911 mounts. He learned to weld, he rebuilt the 2.4 MFI motor, and most of the rest of the work himself, under my supervision. He stands as the youngest R Gruppe member ever that actually has his own car. It's the blue car with the steelies and hub caps. Almost 20 years later, it's still running strong, and I got to spend Black Friday in it with him. Just doesn't get any better.
