I was having coffee this morning when I read your post and decided to do a quick test. Picked a couple of hard rubber fuel hoses from my fuel hoses scrap box and began my investigation.
You don’t need an internal or external coil to keep the cross-section from collapsing based from the test. The U-bend needs more stress than a J-bend and demonstrated how I would fix the problem.
