Skip, one of the dumbest things I ever did was put off the hip replacement. Every single step was OUCH for me. Even in bed, it hurt in most positions.
A few weeks of recovery, and you will wonder why you waited. A month or so later you will feel fine. My doc told me to wait until the scar turned white with no hit of redness, than do normal activities.
His list of never do: Ski, either water or snow, and that included snowboarding or skateboarding. And don;t take a really large step up wit that leg first. Like up into a pickup bed, or the first step up into a tractor or heavy equipment.
When I get into the back of my El Camino, I just use my other leg first. Same for coming down.
