I was part of a twenty or so person tubing trip down a river near me. The river was used for logging many years back and the ramps where the logs entered the river were still there. The pilings caused huge undertows and we knew to avoid them.
One of the girls got too close with her tube and was sucked under and got wedged in between her tube and the pilings. It seemed like five minutes before she finally freed herself. Choking, she came up and had lost all her strength. We got her to the bank and she recovered enough after a while to ride on a tube with another person the rest of the way.
None of us had pfd's....we were in our teens and thought we didn't need them.
