I ended up with a new clutch and pressure plate last year. It would work as designed a couple times after startup, but the clutch petal quickly got so hard it felt like I was going to break the cable pushing it. I started with a new cable (no difference), then changed the clutch and pressure plate. Worked like new - silky smooth.
