I was able to fix the stepper motor. It was a PITA, but it works now. I had a broken wire near the solder pin (my own fault as described by someone else in this thread). I drilled out the two brass rivets, carefully tapped open the motor, unwound 1 winding to get enough wire to strip and resolder, and then put it all back together.
The first time back the motor shaft wasn't turning freely enough because one of the tiny metal tabs was slight bent in, but I opened it again, bent it ever0-so-slightly away from the shaft and pit it back together. Now it spins freely, and runs under power from the board.
The last thing I need to do is find a replacement gear. Waiting to hear from anyone in this thread for where they bought theirs.
