In 1988, Bill Gates brought a forbidden Porsche 959 into the U.S.—a supercar barred for failing safety and emissions rules. Customs seized it, but Gates refused to let go, opting to pay $28 daily storage fees to keep it locked in a bonded warehouse. Over 13 years, that tab skyrocketed past $132,000.
Gates joined forces with fellow enthusiasts to push for change. Their advocacy birthed the 1999 "Show or Display" rule, greenlighting limited drives for rare, historic cars. By 2001, he finally registered and hit the road with his 959, cementing one of motoring's most iconic sagas.
