If you won the $1.6BN lottery . . .
I was idly musing about this. What would I do?
The thing is, 99% of it would be irrelevant to my happiness. Maybe 99.9%. So what to do with the rest?
I’d probably want to give it away. Yes, yes, we’re all close friends, I won’t forget. But after that, I mean. And by giving it away, I don’t really mean all to the taxman. I can think of many worthy causes in addition to supporting municipal functions.
So suppose one sets up a self-managed 501c3 charitable foundation and contributes the IRS limit, which I believe would be 60% of the pre-tax winnings? Pay roughly 50% total income tax on 40% of said winnings, have the other 20% as after-tax income to do who knows what with, and spend the rest of your life managing the charity and thereby doing good by the world with the remaining 60%?
Would this work?
