I'd have to put Steve Martin as my favorite, with a lot of guys right up there. I'll mention Sam Kinison (saw him once), Emo Philips, and Dana Gould as other favorites. And Sarah Silverman, who had her own TV show and has a highly regarded movie.
When I was at UCLA in 1977, my roommate and I drove into Tower Records in downtown LA to see Steve Martin signing his new
Let's Get Small album. I said something stupid imitating him and he graciously smiled and signed our album. I kick myself to this day that we only got one album after realizing my roommate kept it without discussing it with me and flipping a coin or something. Great stuff on that album!
