They could have raised the cabinet maybe 1/2" and got it flush to the wall unless the corner is not square. If you've watched drywall being taped, no corner is 90º 6" out in both directions.
The top does need to sit tight and sealed against the wall to keep water from running behind. A splash makes cleaning easier or you're rubbing against the paint.

Buy what's cheap, slam in place. Nothing wrong with that but you know, it aint gonna to fit perfect.
