Yes, to measure the system pressure this T / isolation valve is necessary. Also you can play with that valve to "emulate" a WUR to see how the engine reacts on various control pressures in case of a bad WUR...

I also perform this exact procedure, but only after the car has been sitting for more than three months...probably after winter break or especially after oil change. I suppose that this is not really required as there is still a bit oil on all bearing points. But it's reassuring...
