Steve, buy a Toto. That's the last word in these things. They are spendy but Toto USA does have a refurbish program that is rather affordable. Last I checked it was a full job for $125, shipping exclusive, but they send the box!

Which means you can buy refurbished or open box, both of which are sanitary. I've done that 2wice now (the first one we had so long that Toto removed if from the eligible list) and never had a worry. Kohler makes a decent one that comes in 2nd place. Not a thing wrong with a Kohler and they can cost less.

There is absolutely no potential for shock. You are required to use a GFCI anyway, even if an old house has a 2-wire system (they work under that circumstance).

My wife never turned off the heated seat for over 6 years. And that's not what failed. What happens with these is calcium build up on the little valves and they can start dripping. They drip right into the pool of water which is annoying. You can access the tank for a periodic vinegar treatment. Otherwise they are ToToally silent.

I have never used one that I can remember. If I did, that tells you my impression, but I'm sure it is a convenience you can get used to and probably take a liking to.
