I vividly remember my dad, while in the hospital, gasping for breath even when on 100% oxygen and he looked me in the eyes and said "son, a man should not have to live like this"
He was tethered to oxygen 22/7 and getting over to the toilet was a maximum effort.
I could not disagree at all. Food was an effort as well as one must stop breathing as one swallows the food. He died a few days later when his heart gave out.
My former boss did it right. In his words, he took early retirement at age 92 and he sold the company. When he was 99, he kissed his wife goodnight as she was watching a movie he did not care to see. He walked upstairs with no difficulty and got ready for bed. His wife found him in bed dead. They did not do an autopsy to determine if it was a stroke or heart attack as it really did not matter.
