melatonin works great for jetlag, don't think that long term daily use would be a good idea.
counting sheep or anything else is a good way to hypnotize yourself but sometimes you need more than that
no alcohol is a must, you might be out but it's not a restorative sleep
dark, cool, quiet room is a big plus
avoid screen time before bed time

I take a Magnesium Glycinate after dinner, seems to wok very well, though it also seems like it took a few months to kick in fully. My issue was never about getting to sleep, but rather getting back to sleep after Prostate issues force pee brakes ~1-2AM and again ~4 --5AM
