That was precisely the case in the classic 1956 Sci-Fi film,
Forbidden Planet. The Krell civilization's technology advanced faster than their ability to control it. And in the end, it took them down.
Spooky how similar this plot device may be to our current situation with ai...hope it doesn't end the same way though.
