I see manipulation of voter preferences as one of the biggest problems we'll be facing in our AI-influenced future.
Oxford University and the London School of Economics conducted a joint study of AI involving over 70K participants. One thing they found was that AI can be 4X more effective than traditional TV ads at persuading voters to change their opinion of a political candidate. And it wasn't just a momentary change of heart either...a followup study 3 months later revealed that these newly-formed opinions weren't likely to revert back to the voter's initial preference.
Research conducted by other organizations has also turned up similar findings.
And this is with the current state of AI, which is barely out of the gate. I fear there'll be serious issues with the electoral process down the line when AI becomes many times more sophisticated than it is right now.
