100%.
Living in the PNW my entire life and our amazingly grey depressing winters, I have thought much about this.
I tell everyone who moves here to do the following: 1) take up a winter sport. Whether hiking, snowshoeing, skiing. Whatever. GET OUTSIDE and move. Also, lots of winter sports are above the cloud cover so that counterintuitively, you get out of the grey. 2) Vitamin D. 3) A happy light if 1 and 2 are not enough.
I was a 50 day a year skier growing up. Never had any sort of SAD back then because I got so much sunshine. Now? Winter can be bleak.
I also make a habit of traveling to somewhere sunny during the dark months.
