Labor costs vary wildly between the US and Far East manufacturing hubs...many smaller local companies just can't compete and have to charge more.

That's part of it. The ability to produce a huge quantity of goods cheaply, than sell to a worldwide market, has given rise to these 'fly-by-night' operations.
