I have a gas furnace using natural gas. Been that way for the 30 years (come July) I have been here.
It's the only gas appliance I use so I have the gas company turn my meter off each Spring and back on in late Fall so I am not charged a monthly service fee for the 8 months I don't need it.
Apparently the gas company changed over their software a couple years ago and things have been bonkers since.
Including doing 'estimates' on gas usage, rather then having a human actually read my meter each month.
I wouldn't be so opposed to this method except whatever approach they are using for 'estimating' is WAY WAY off - in THEIR favor for the past 3 months.
So much so that I finally had the gas turned off today and when the final reading was entered into their system it resulted in a credit for me in the amount of: Bill Amount -692.48.
I've always had auto-pay in place for bills to be paid directly from my checking account - so the next step will be for them to send me a refund check.
The reason for the "pet peeve" is the PITA time consumption on my part - that I didn't go into here - to finally get things resolved.'
When I get my gas turned back on this fall we will be changing my current meter out for an "Itron I-250" which can be read by someone in their truck in front of my house.
