Black widows don't generally get super big. Their back end tops out at around 3/8" or 10mm. Legs and all they may be an inch across. They usually hide, and aren't really "scurriers".
The "big" spiders that are scurriers usually sit more flat to the ground and run around to catch stuff. Most of the spiders like that are harmless (but ugly suckers).
Then, there are tarantulas
