This is common in China. On the trip before last, around 2019, when no one would let Mrs. Lee or me pay for anything for the whole trip, Mrs. Lee told me that tonight's dinner would be on me and I'd need to go the ATM and get some cash. I got the equivalent of $300. Dinner was a grand feast, private dining room, "more everything!" Sure enough, one of her cousins, while coming back from a smoke break paid it all before we even got the bill. I just finally got to spend that cash on my last trip to China a few months ago.
